What does it consist of?

The Balearic Government is working on a comprehensive plan to promote electric mobility across the four major islands, partially funded by sustainable tourism tax. The initiative seeks to electrify public transport routes, create a fast-charging network and promote the energy transition among private and rental vehicles.

The project

The gradual replacement of combustion vehicles with electric vehicles is a key step in the Balearic Islands’ sustainability strategy. Electrification will significantly reduce CO₂ emissions and other pollutants, as well as fossil fuel consumption, in line with European decarbonisation targets. It will also strengthen the image of the archipelago as a responsible, environmentally friendly tourist destination.

The plan targets two specific goals: firstly, to modernise regular public transport routes with electric vehicles in order to improve efficiency and attract more passengers. Secondly, to boost the electrification of private vehicles, company cars and rental vehicles through an extensive fast-charging infrastructure and new opportunities for the local economy.

The planned actions include installing facilities required to electrify interurban public transport in Mallorca, infrastructure for the other islands and the creation of a network of fast recharging points throughout the region. With a budget of more than €30 million to be executed until 2026, the plan, which is still underway, has already allocated more than €3 million to the initial phases.
