The project

The Balearic Islands are home to active research centres in a range of fields, but they still lack a stable structure that brings together the region’s science network as a whole. The project to create the Balearic Islands Research Institute (IRIB), a public foundation that provides a platform for the coordination, promotion and visibility of research activity across the archipelago, was developed with this goal in mind.

A core objective is to provide the region with its own administrative framework to support the recruitment of science professionals, the efficient management of resources, and the attraction of competitive investment. This entity is also expected to help boost knowledge transfer to society and businesses, fostering greater connection between research, innovation and economic development.

The IRIB also aims to actively promote talent by attracting researchers and encouraging interest in science from an early age in schools. The foundation aims to strengthen scientific culture and entrepreneurship throughout the region, contributing to a more unified regional innovation strategy.

The project, currently in the development phase, has a budget of €300,000, funded by sustainable tourism tax. Although the project is progressing gradually, it’s seen as a key tool for building a more competitive research ecosystem, with a greater capacity for impact and more in tune with the scientific and technological challenges of the 21st century.
