The strategy involves surveillance, staff reinforcement and information campaigns with a clear goal: to encourage responsible behaviour from tourists.

The project

The municipality of Sant Antoni in Ibiza has devised a range of measures to respond to the impact of mass tourism, especially in the summer months. The plan foresees action in five key areas: security, control, information, training and administrative management. This plan is in line with the goal of promoting greater balance in tourism, so that it respects the environment and the locals.

The measures planned include the addition of 12 new local police officers, the purchase of surveillance drones and the installation of cameras at trouble spots. There are also plans to hire private security guards and to create a dog unit. The aim of all this is to boost municipal response capacity in nightlife hotspots and to prevent anti-social behaviour.

The campaign also goes beyond surveillance. Informational material will be issued in several languages aimed at tourists, explaining local regulations, the current legal framework—such as Decree Llei 1/2020—and the penalties for behaviour such as nitrous oxide consumption, littering and illegal holiday rentals. To reinforce this message, the municipality plans to hire public informants to patrol throughout the day.

The total investment amounts to €8.8 million, which will be distributed until 2027. Beyond reinforcing police staff and reporting channels, the plan includes the creation of a shooting gallery and a training room for operational practices, which will also be open to police forces from other municipalities on the island. The ultimate goal: to improve security, reduce conflict and protect the reputation of Ibiza as a tourist destination.
