New Tank to Improve Water Supply in Jesús and Sant Antoni

The infrastructure optimises the water network and integrates desalinated water into the municipal water service

What does it consist of?

Santa Eulària des Riu Town Council has completed the construction of a regulation tank to optimise the water supply in several towns in Ibiza. The action, partially financed by sustainable tourism tax, ensures better water quality and a more efficient service for the population.

The project

This plan addresses the shortcomings of the previous supply system, which was based on boreholes that pumped water on demand, with a small tail tank of just 300 m³. This model caused constant pressure fluctuations in the network, contributing to the wear and tear of the facilities and increasing the likelihood of breakdowns. The situation was affecting the quality of service and the stability of supply to users.

The new infrastructure consists of a regulation tank that can receive water from both wells and desalination plants, store it and ensure its quality before distribution. This solution also provides a back-up in the event of incidents at desalination plants, ensuring a safer service compliant with health regulations.

The works, carried out between 2017 and 2018, have also made it possible to integrate desalinated water into the municipal network, improving supply to the towns of Jesús, Puig d'en Valls, Sant Antoni and Eivissa. The facility is part of plans to publicise the service, which until now was partly dependent on private companies, and makes the island’s water management more sustainable.

The overall budget was over €1 million, of which more than €548,000 came from sustainable tourism tax. The plan is part of the environmental goal of making water networks more modern and efficient, for the direct benefit of citizens and the natural environment.
