What does it consist of?

Mallorca imports around 70,000 tonnes of wood per year, despite having a large area of neglected woodland. A new project in the Serra de Tramuntana region seeks to tackle this paradox with clean-ups, health & safety measures and the sustainable use of local timber.

The project

The progressive decline of traditional farming and forestry activity in the Serra de Tramuntana region has led to the uncontrolled expansion of the Mediterranean forest. This situation has made the area more vulnerable to fires, pests and storms. Forest management has once again become a strategic priority.

With an investment of €1.78 million until 2027, the project includes work in several municipalities across the Serra de Tramuntana region. This will involve clearing undergrowth in areas close to town centres, safety strips on paths and roads, removal of fallen or damaged trees and forestry work to improve the structure and biodiversity in the forests.

Beyond the environmental impact, the initiative promotes the economic use of all timber harvested. In Pollença, for example, it is already used to make furniture, structures and local crafts. This promotes a more resilient rural economy, linked to the island and less dependent on imports.

The project is led by the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium and includes technical and environmental monitoring. The approach brings together landscape conservation, health & safety, job creation and recovery of woodland heritage which, until now, has remained untapped.
