Palma Launches the Environmental Restoration of the Es Carnatge Coastline

The Es Carnatge coastline will be renovated with public funds for its conservation and sustainable use

What does it consist of?

The Es Carnatge area, one of the last natural stretches of Palma's coastline, will undergo comprehensive environmental works. Palma City Council will develop a project funded by sustainable tourism tax (ITS) to restore its land and marine ecosystem. Work is expected to start in July 2025.

The project

The restoration of Es Carnatge forms part of the 2024–2025 Annual Plan for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism. This space, located between Es Coll d'en Rabassa and Can Pastilla, is one of the few undeveloped stretches of Palma’s coastline. The project responds to the need to curb damage caused by overtourism, erosion, squatting and the build-up of waste in the area.

The plan is to work on both the natural environment and the existing infrastructure. On land, it is planned to clean up waste, remove invasive species, restore woodland areas and replenish dune vegetation. For the marine ecosystem, action will be taken to remove rubbish from the coastal seabed. Environmental sensors will also be installed to track any changes in the area through AI monitoring technology.

Improvements will also be made to the lighting along the seafront, which is currently in poor condition. It will be replaced by solar streetlights. Moreover, the actions include new pedestrian routes, signage and street furniture to ensure accessibility and provide information about the area for residents and visitors.

This project, which has a budget of €4.4 million and is funded by sustainable tourism tax, aims to reconcile conservation and public access in an ecologically important space. It has been planned in line with the principles of energy transition, sustainable mobility and the fight to reduce seasonality in tourism. Work is expected to start in summer 2025.
