What does it consist of?

Mallorca is leading an island-wide action to renovate water infrastructure in 18 municipalities. The project includes improvements to drinking water networks, regulation tanks, rainwater collection and remote reading systems, seeking to reduce losses, optimise resources and strengthen the island’s water resilience.

The project

Water management has become a major challenge for Mallorca. The combination of longer drought periods, ageing networks and increasing demand requires the acceleration of infrastructure modernisation, as many systems still experience significant losses and constrain municipal capacity to respond to scarcity episodes.

The project proposes a broad and diversified set of actions across 18 municipalities, ranging from the renovation of drinking water pipes to the construction and upgrading of regulation tanks. It also provides for new rainwater harvesting networks, a measure that not only improves rainwater management, but also helps prevent flooding in urban environments.

There’ll also be new drinking water treatment facilities, treated water irrigation networks digital remote meter reading systems. This technology upgrade will provide more accurate information about consumption, faster detection of incidents and progress towards more precise network management. The project also provides for the recovery of currently untapped water resources, alongside targeted actions to locate and reduce leaks.

Beyond technical improvements, the initiative responds to an underlying need: to provide a more stable and sustainable supply on an island where water is a limited resource. The modernisation of this infrastructure aims to reduce waste, boost efficiency and prepare Mallorca for an increasingly demanding climate scenario.
