Felanitx Modernises Its Water Network With Remote Meter Readings

The municipality is implementing a smart system to reduce leaks and improve water management

What does it consist of?

Felanitx is promoting a remote metering project to better control drinking water consumption and reduce supply losses, which exceeded 40% in 2021. The initiative will see outdated meters replaced, better remote control of the system, and new tools for more efficient, more transparent management.

The project

Water management remains a major challenge in several municipalities across Mallorca, especially where the distribution network is years old and has a whole range of issues. In Felanitx, this situation has led particularly high losses, well above the threshold set by the Balearic Water Plan. The need to modernise the system is therefore both a technical and environmental priority.

The project will replace existing meters with new devices that use remote reading technology based on radio frequency. This network will allow hourly consumption to be recorded without the need to physically access each device, which will improve both service control and the early detection of leaks or other issues. This action is intended to cover all supply points, including those that, until now, did not have meters or were running on outdated equipment.

The data collected will be available on a digital platform that can be accessed by the operator and the public through a web portal. This change will not only ensure that bills better line up with what’s actually used, but also allows users to be more involved in responsible water use. In this case, digitalisation is not limited to administrative efficiency: it also enhances transparency and incident response times.

Finally, chlorine meters will also be placed at strategic points along with a remote-control system to optimise pumping from the wells to the tanks. Overall, the project seeks more precise and sustainable management of the water cycle in the municipality, with the aim of reducing waste and adapting the network to the demand of an increasingly limited resource.
