What does it consist of?

The project

In 2011, UNESCO recognised the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range as a World Heritage Site due to its cultural landscape, the result of centuries of human adaptation to a difficult environment. In this context, the Council of Mallorca decided to purchase the entire Castell d'Alaró site, including the Es Verger estate, in order for it to become part of the publicly managed land.

Located at an altitude of 822 metres, the Castell d'Alaró is one of the few rock castles in Mallorca. Its defensive structures, its cisterns dating from the Islamic period and its rugged terrain all make it an asset of great heritage value. The estate also includes ethnological elements such as a lime kiln and water collection systems that are part of the historical legacy of the area.

Funded with resources from the Sustainable Tourism Tax, the operation addresses the objectives set out in the Management Plan of the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium. These include the conservation of cultural elements, sustainable public use and improved landscape interpretation. The Council of Mallorca, which already manages other estates and shelters, will take on the maintenance of the site.

According to the dossier, the purchase price has been set at just over one million euros. The purchase will not only preserve the architectural heritage, but will also improve access for hikers and visitors, strengthening the link between tourism and the preservation of the environment. The inclusion of the castle in the UNESCO domain strengthens the coherence of the island's cultural protection model.
